Over the past few years, rosary bead necklaces have been turning up on the necks of celebrities like Madonna, in addition to rap singers and other celebrities. It’s started a fashion trend which has both shocked and dismayed some Catholics. The burning question by the Catholic masses has been, Is it or perhaps is it not OK to put on the rosary as a necklace?

What exactly are Rosary Beads?

Rosary beads are utilized to count the series of prayers that make up the praying from the rosary. The prayers are combination of the Lords’ Prayer, followed by 10 Hail Marys, and one Glory be towards the Father. Each of these number of prayers are known as a decade and the praying of every decade is combined with mediation on one from the mysteries from the rosary that can remember the life of Jesus. Catholics pray what are known as five “decades,” which contain five different meditations concerning the lives of Jesus and Mary.

Rosaries Necklaces Have Long Tradition

Christians have been wearing rosary bead necklaces for more than Five centuries as protection from the devil as well as for comfort in times during the stress or peril. The practice continues to be common in most Spanish speaking countries. It’s only in recent years that some groups have caused issues by wearing the rosary not as a prayer tool or comfort, but just as a fashion statement.

However, i am not saying it’s wrong to wear one if it’s done in a respectful manner and it’s used for the correct purpose.

Exactly what does the Church Say?

The Roman Catholic Church says that sacred objects which are used for divine worship by dedication or blessing should be treated with reverence. They go on to spell out that it’s acceptable to wear a rosary if you’re doing it to worship or show your dedication to God, although not for secular or non-religious reasons like fashion statements. All this is produced in the Catholic Church’s Code of Canon Law.

In other words, if you are putting it on since it is the “in” thing to do rather than to show your trust and dedication towards the Lord, then you’re putting it on for the wrong reasons. If you’re putting it on to wish to our Lord, in order to show your dedication to him, then there is no problem with it which is not sacrilegious.

Some priests do say that it’s sacrilegious for any non-believer to wear a rosary in a fashion, but say that the believer can do in order long because it is a method to remind them they should pray which God is definitely close to their heart.

You can find rosary bead necklaces in a number of forms from simple plastic or wood to very costly ones made of gold and real jewels. What they are made of does not matter; it is the meaning and the devotion you feel on their behalf that means something.

Bottom Line? Yes, it’s fine to wear the rosary like a necklace as long as you are doing it to show your trust and dedication, but not as a fashion statement.
